NCSoft, the publisher behind Guild Wars 2, released the earnings report from quarter 4 of 2016 today. According to the report, GW2 had its lowest earnings this most recent quarter; they earned 14.87 billion Korean won (approximately 13.3 million US dollars). Prior to Q4, the worst performing quarter was Q3 – and before that it was Q2.
As GW2 is in between expansions at the moment this should not come as a surprise. Expansion-based MMOs operate on a boom-bust cycle. We are currently in a bust and a boom should come when the next expansion releases.
